Riyah reported: My family married me to a slave-girl of theirs of Byzantine origin. I had relations with her, and she gave birth to a black boy like me, whom I named Abdullah. Then I had relations with her again, and she gave birth to a black boy like me, whom I named Ubayd Allah. Then a slave-boy belonging to my family, a Byzantine named Yuhannah, began to converse with her frequently in his language, and she gave birth to a boy who resembled a lizard among lizards. I asked her: What is this? She replied: This belongs to Yuhannah.
We then brought the case to Uthman — I think Mahdi said these words. He inquired from both of them, and they acknowledged (the facts). He then said to them: Do you agree that I decide between you according to the judgment of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)? Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) decided that the child belongs to the bed. And I think he said: He flogged her and flogged him, for they were slaves.
