Abu Nadhrah reported: An old man of Tufawah said to me: I stayed as a guest with Abu Hurayrah in Medina, and I did not see any of the Companions of the Prophet (ﷺ) more devoted to worship and more hospitable to guests than Abu Hurayrah. While I was with him one day, he was sitting on a bed of his, and with him was a purse containing pebbles or date-stones, and beneath him was a black slave-girl of his. He was glorifying Allah with them until when what was in the purse was finished, he threw it to her, and she collected them and returned them to the purse, then pushed it back to him. He said: "Shall I not narrate to you something from me and from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)?" I said: "Yes." He said: "While I was stricken with fever in the mosque, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came and entered the mosque, and said three times: 'Who has noticed the young man of Daws?' A man said: 'O Messenger of Allah, he is over there, stricken with fever in a corner of the mosque.' He came walking until he reached me and placed his hand upon me, saying something kind to me. I stood up and he walked until he reached his place where he prayed, and he turned to face them, with two rows of men and a row of women, or two rows of women and a row of men.
He then said: 'If the Satan causes me to forget anything in my prayer, then the men should glorify Allah and the women should clap.' So the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prayed and did not forget anything in his prayer. Then he said: 'Remain in your gatherings, remain in your gatherings.' Musa added: 'Right here.' Then he praised Allah the Exalted and extolled Him, then said: 'As for what follows,' and then they agreed. He then turned to the men and said: 'Is there any man among you who goes to his wife, closes his door, draws his curtain, and screens himself with the veil of Allah?' They said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Then he sits after that and says: "I did such and such, I did such and such."' They remained silent. Then he turned to the women and said: 'Is there any among you women who narrates [such things]?' They remained silent. Then a young girl knelt upon one of her knees and raised herself up towards the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) so that he might see her and hear her speech, and she said: 'O Messenger of Allah, they indeed speak of it, and they indeed speak of it!' He said: 'Do you know what the likeness of that is? The likeness of that is only the likeness of a female devil who met a male devil in a pathway, and he fulfilled his desire with her while the people were looking at him! Verily, the best fragrance of men is whose scent is apparent and whose color is hidden, and the best fragrance of women is whose color is apparent and whose scent is hidden.'
Abu Dawud said: From here I memorized this from Mu'ammil and Musa: 'Beware, no man shall lie with another man, nor a woman with a woman, except with a child or a father' — and he mentioned a third which I was caused to forget, and it is in the narration of Musaddad, but I did not master it as well as I would like. Musa said: Hammad narrated to us from al-Jariri from Abu Nadhrah from the Tufawi.
