Sunan Abi Dawud 4694

Musaddad ibn Musarhad narrated to us; al-Mu‘tamir narrated to us. He said: I heard Mansur ibn al-Mu‘tamir relate, from Sa‘d ibn Ubaydah, from Abdullah ibn Habib Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami, from Ali, peace be upon him, who said: We were at a funeral in al-Baqi‘ al-Gharqad, where the Messenger of Allah was also present. He came and sat down with a slender stick, which he began scratching into the ground. Then he raised his head and said: ‘There is not one of you—there is not one living soul—whose place in the Fire or in Paradise Allah has not recorded, and who has not been recorded as wretched or happy.’ A man among the people said, ‘Prophet of Allah, should we not then rely on what has been written for us and leave action? Whoever is among the people of happiness will surely reach happiness, and whoever is among the people of wretchedness will surely reach wretchedness.’ He said: ‘Act, for each person will be made able to do what he is destined for. As for the people of happiness, they will be made able to attain happiness; and as for the people of wretchedness, they will be made able to attain wretchedness.’ Then the Prophet of Allah said: ‘As for the one who gives, is mindful of Allah, and affirms the best, We will make the path to ease easy for him; but as for the one who is miserly, deems himself self-sufficient, and denies the best, We will make the path to hardship easy for him.’
