Sunan Abi Dawud 4716
Arabic hadith text
حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ، حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجُ بْنُ الْمِنْهَالِ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ حَمَّادَ بْنَ سَلَمَةَ، يُفَسِّرُ حَدِيثَ " كُلُّ مَوْلُودٍ يُولَدُ عَلَى الْفِطْرَةِ " . قَالَ هَذَا عِنْدَنَا حَيْثُ أَخَذَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِمُ الْعَهْدَ فِي أَصْلاَبِ آبَائِهِمْ حَيْثُ قَالَ { أَلَسْتُ بِرَبِّكُمْ قَالُوا بَلَى } .
Translation
Al-Hasan ibn ‘Ali narrated to us: Hajjaj ibn al-Minh al narrated to us, saying: I heard Hammad ibn Salamah explain the hadith, ‘Every newborn is born upon the fitrah.’ He said: ‘In our view, this refers to the covenant Allah took from them in their fathers’ loins, when He said, “Am I not your Lord?” They replied, “Yes indeed.”’
