‘Abd al-A‘la ibn Hammad, Muhammad ibn al-Muthanna, Muhammad ibn Bashshar, and Ahmad ibn Sa‘id al-Ribati said: Wahb ibn Jarir narrated to us—Ahmad said, ‘We copied it from his manuscript, and this is its wording’—saying: My father narrated to us: I heard Muhammad ibn Ishaq narrate from Ya‘qub ibn ‘Utbah, from Jubayr ibn Muhammad ibn Jubayr ibn Mut‘im, from his father, from his grandfather, who said: A Bedouin came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and said, ‘Messenger of Allah, people are distressed, families are in want, wealth is depleted, and livestock have perished. Ask Allah to send us rain, for we seek your intercession with Allah, and Allah’s intercession with you.’ The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, ‘Woe to you! Do you know what you are saying?’ The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) glorified Allah and continued glorifying Him until that could be seen on the faces of his Companions. Then he said, ‘Woe to you! Allah is not to be invoked as an intercessor with any of His creation; Allah’s majesty is greater than that. Woe to you! Do you know who Allah is? His Throne is over His heavens like this’—and he gestured with his fingers like a dome above him—‘and it creaks beneath Him like a saddle creaking under a rider.’ Ibn Bashshar’s version says: ‘Allah is above His Throne, and His Throne is above His heavens.’ He then gave the rest of the report. ‘Abd al-A‘la, Ibn al-Muthanna, and Ibn Bashshar transmitted it from Ya‘qub ibn ‘Utbah and Jubayr ibn Muhammad ibn Jubayr, from his father, from his grandfather. Abu Dawud said: The chain in Ahmad ibn Sa‘id’s version is the sound one; a group agreed with him, including Yahya ibn Ma‘in and ‘Ali ibn al-Madini. A group also transmitted it from Ibn Ishaq as Ahmad did. As far as I have been informed, ‘Abd al-A‘la, Ibn al-Muthanna, and Ibn Bashshar heard it from the same manuscript.
