Abu Dawud said: Musaddad in his tradition said that Ma’mar said: The people ceased to recite (the Qur’an) in what the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) recited aloud. Ibn al-Sarh said in his version: Ma’mar from al-Zuhri said: Abu Hurairah said: Then the people ceased. And Abdullah ibn Muhammad al-Zuhri said from among them: Sufyan said: And al-Zuhri spoke a word that I did not hear, so Ma’mar said: He said: Then the people ceased.
Abu Dawud said: Abd al-Rahman ibn Ishaq narrated it from al-Zuhri, and his tradition ends at his statement: "What is it that I am disputed with regarding the Qur’an?" And al-Awza'i narrated it from al-Zuhri, and in it he said: Al-Zuhri said: The Muslims took admonition from that, so they would not recite with him in what the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) recited aloud.
Abu Dawud said: I heard Muhammad ibn Yahya ibn Faris saying: The saying, "Then the people ceased," is from the speech of al-Zuhri.
