A Person Praying Voluntary Prayers In The Same Place That He Prayed The Obligatory Prayer — Sunan Abi Dawud 1007

An imam of ours, whose kunyah was Abu Rimthah, led us in prayer and said, "I prayed this prayer – or a prayer like this – with the Prophet (ﷺ)." Abu Bakr and Umar used to stand in the front row to his right. A man had witnessed the first takbir of the prayer, so the Prophet of Allah (ﷺ) prayed, then delivered the salutation to his right and to his left until we saw the whiteness of his cheeks. Then he turned away just as Abu Rimthah – meaning himself – turned away. Then the man who had caught the first takbir with him stood up to perform an additional unit, whereupon Umar sprang towards him, seized him by the shoulder, shook him, and said, "Sit down! For the People of the Book only perished because there was no pause between their prayers." The Prophet (ﷺ) raised his gaze and said, "May Allah make you hit the mark, O son of Al-Khattab!"

Abu Dawud said: It has also been said Abu Umayyah in place of Abu Rimthah.
