(Prostrating For) Forgetfulness After The Two Prostrations (Rak'ah) — Sunan Abi Dawud 1008

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) led us in one of the afternoon prayers—either Dhuhr or 'Asr—and he prayed two rak'ahs with us, then gave the salutation. Then he stood up towards a piece of wood in the front of the mosque and placed his hands upon it, one over the other, and anger could be recognized in his face. The people went out quickly, saying: "The prayer has been shortened! The prayer has been shortened!" Among the people were Abu Bakr and 'Umar, but they were too afraid to speak to him. Then a man stood up whom the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to call Dhu al-Yadain (the Possessor of Two Hands), and he said: "O Messenger of Allah, have you forgotten, or has the prayer been shortened?" He replied: "I have not forgotten, nor has the prayer been shortened." The man said: "Rather, you have forgotten, O Messenger of Allah." The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) turned to the people and said: "Did Dhu al-Yadain speak the truth?" They made a sign, meaning yes. So the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) returned to his place and prayed the remaining two rak'ahs, then gave the salutation. It was said to Muhammad: "Did he give the salutation concerning forgetfulness?" He said: "I do not memorize it from Abu Hurairah, but I have been informed that 'Imran ibn Husain said: 'Then he gave the salutation.'"
