Prayer passed through three stages, and fasting passed through three stages. Nasr narrated the hadith in full, while Ibn al-Muthanna related the portion concerning their prayer facing the direction of Jerusalem exclusively. He stated: The third phase was that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came to Medina and prayed—meaning towards Jerusalem—for thirteen months. Then Allah, the Exalted, revealed this verse:
We have seen the turning of thy face to the heaven; for surely We will turn thee to a qiblah that shall please thee. Turn then thy face towards the Sacred Mosque, and wherever you are, turn your faces towards itAnd Allah, the Exalted, directed his face towards the Kaaba. The report was completed.
Nasr mentioned the person who saw the vision, stating: Abdullah ibn Zayd, a man from the Ansar, came and mentioned regarding it: He faced the qiblah and said, "Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar; Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah; Ashhadu an anna Muhammadan Rasulullah, Ashhadu an anna Muhammadan Rasulullah; Hayya 'ala-s-salah (twice), Hayya 'ala-l-falah (twice); Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar; La ilaha illallah." Then he waited for a brief moment, stood up, and said the like of it, except that after saying "Hayya 'ala-l-falah," he added: "Qad qamati-s-salah, Qad qamati-s-salah." Thereupon the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Dictate it to Bilal." So Bilal gave the call to prayer with it.
Concerning fasting, he said: Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to fast three days of every month and fast the day of Ashura. Then Allah, the Exalted, revealed:
Fast has been prescribed for you, as it was prescribed for those before youup to His saying:
the feeding of a poor personSo whoever wished to fast, fasted; and whoever wished not to fast and instead fed a poor person for every day, that sufficed him. This was for a period of one year. Then Allah, the Exalted, revealed:
The month of Ramadan in which the Quran was revealedup to
other daysThus, fasting became obligatory upon whoever witnesses the month and upon the traveler to make it up, while the obligation of feeding remained for the elderly man and the elderly woman who are unable to fast.
A group came after having worked their day, and he narrated the rest of the hadith.
