حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ حَنْبَلٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَهَّابِ الثَّقَفِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا حَبِيبٌ، - يَعْنِي الْمُعَلِّمَ - عَنْ عَطَاءٍ، حَدَّثَنِي جَابِرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم أَهَلَّ هُوَ وَأَصْحَابُهُ بِالْحَجِّ وَلَيْسَ مَعَ أَحَدٍ مِنْهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ هَدْىٌ إِلاَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم وَطَلْحَةَ وَكَانَ عَلِيٌّ - رضى الله عنه - قَدِمَ مِنَ الْيَمَنِ وَمَعَهُ الْهَدْىُ فَقَالَ أَهْلَلْتُ بِمَا أَهَلَّ بِهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم وَأَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم أَمَرَ أَصْحَابَهُ أَنْ يَجْعَلُوهَا عُمْرَةً يَطُوفُوا ثُمَّ يُقَصِّرُوا وَيَحِلُّوا إِلاَّ مَنْ كَانَ مَعَهُ الْهَدْىُ فَقَالُوا أَنَنْطَلِقُ إِلَى مِنًى وَذُكُورُنَا تَقْطُرُ فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَقَالَ ‏"‏لَوْ أَنِّي اسْتَقْبَلْتُ مِنْ أَمْرِي مَا اسْتَدْبَرْتُ مَا أَهْدَيْتُ وَلَوْلاَ أَنَّ مَعِيَ الْهَدْىَ لأَحْلَلْتُ ‏"

Ahmad ibn Hanbal narrated to us: Abd al-Wahhab al-Thaqafi narrated to us: Habib - meaning al-Mu'allim - narrated to us from Ata', and Jabir ibn Abdullah narrated to me that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) entered into the state of Ihram for Hajj along with his companions, and none of them had sacrificial animals with them on that day except the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) and Talhah. Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) had come from Yemen with sacrificial animals, and he said, "I have entered into Ihram for what the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) entered into Ihram for." The Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) commanded his companions to turn it into an Umrah, perform Tawaf, clip their hair, and exit Ihram, except for those who had the sacrificial animals with them. They said, "Should we set out for Mina while our private parts are dripping [with fluid]?" This reached the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), and he said, "If I had known of my affair beforehand what I came to know later, I would not have brought sacrificial animals, and had it not been that I have sacrificial animals with me, I would have exited Ihram."
