حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَلَمَةَ، مُوسَى بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَاصِمٍ الْغَنَوِيُّ، عَنْ أَبِي الطُّفَيْلِ، قَالَ قُلْتُ لاِبْنِ عَبَّاسٍ يَزْعُمُ قَوْمُكَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَدْ رَمَلَ بِالْبَيْتِ وَأَنَّ ذَلِكَ سُنَّةٌ ‏.‏ قَالَ صَدَقُوا وَكَذَبُوا ‏.‏ قُلْتُ وَمَا صَدَقُوا وَمَا كَذَبُوا قَالَ صَدَقُوا قَدْ رَمَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم وَكَذَبُوا لَيْسَ بِسُنَّةٍ إِنَّ قُرَيْشًا قَالَتْ زَمَنَ الْحُدَيْبِيَةِ دَعُوا مُحَمَّدًا وَأَصْحَابَهُ حَتَّى يَمُوتُوا مَوْتَ النَّغَفِ ‏.‏ فَلَمَّا صَالَحُوهُ عَلَى أَنْ يَجِيئُوا مِنَ الْعَاِمِ الْمُقْبِلِ فَيُقِيمُوا بِمَكَّةَ ثَلاَثَةَ أَيَّامٍ فَقَدِمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم وَالْمُشْرِكُونَ مِنْ قِبَلِ قُعَيْقِعَانَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم لأَصْحَابِهِ ‏"‏ارْمُلُوا بِالْبَيْتِ ثَلاَثًا ‏"‏ ‏.‏ وَلَيْسَ بِسُنَّةٍ ‏.‏ قُلْتُ يَزْعُمُ قَوْمُكَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم طَافَ بَيْنَ الصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةِ عَلَى بَعِيرِهِ وَأَنَّ ذَلِكَ سُنَّةٌ فَقَالَ صَدَقُوا وَكَذَبُوا ‏.‏ قُلْتُ مَا صَدَقُوا وَمَا كَذَبُوا قَالَ صَدَقُوا قَدْ طَافَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم بَيْنَ الصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةِ عَلَى بَعِيرِهِ وَكَذَبُوا لَيْسَ بِسُنَّةٍ كَانَ النَّاسُ لاَ يُدْفَعُونَ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم وَلاَ يُصْرَفُونَ عَنْهُ فَطَافَ عَلَى بَعِيرٍ لِيَسْمَعُوا كَلاَمَهُ وَلِيَرَوْا مَكَانَهُ وَلاَ تَنَالَهُ أَيْدِيهِمْ ‏.‏

Abu al-Tufayl said: I said to Ibn Abbas, "Your people claim that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) performed ramal [brisk walking with shoulder movement] around the House, and that this is a sunnah." He said, "They spoke the truth and they lied." I asked, "What is the truth they spoke and what is the lie they told?" He said, "As for the truth, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) did perform ramal. As for the lie, it is not a sunnah. Quraysh said at the time of al-Hudaybiyyah: 'Leave Muhammad and his companions until they die the death of the naghaf [a disease that kills camels].' When they made a peace treaty with him on the terms that they would come the following year and stay in Makkah for three days, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came, and the polytheists were from the direction of Qu'ayqi'an. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to his companions, 'Perform ramal around the House for three [circuits].' And it is not a sunnah." He said: I said, "Your people claim that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) performed tawaf between al-Safa and al-Marwah on his mount, and that this is a sunnah." He said, "They spoke the truth and they lied." I asked, "What is the truth they spoke and what is the lie they told?" He said, "As for the truth, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) did perform tawaf between al-Safa and al-Marwah on his mount. As for the lie, it is not a sunnah. The people would not be kept away from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) nor would they be turned away from him, so he performed tawaf on his mount so that they could hear his speech, see his place, and so that their hands could not reach him."
