Translation

Jaʿfar bin Muḥammad reported on the authority of his father: We entered upon Jābir bin ʿAbd Allāh. When we reached him, he asked about the people until he reached me. I said, “I am Muḥammad bin ʿAlī bin Ḥusayn.” He patted my head with his hand, undid my upper button, then undid my lower button, and placed his palm between my nipples, while I was at that time a young boy. He said, “Welcome to you, my nephew. Ask whatever you wish.” I questioned him while he was blind. The time of prayer came, and he stood wrapped in a mantle—meaning a patched garment—such that whenever he placed its ends on his shoulders, they returned to him because of its smallness. He led us in prayer while his upper garment was on a peg by his side. I said, “Tell me about the Ḥajj of the Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ).” He pointed with his hand, folding his fingers to indicate nine. Then he said, “Indeed, the Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) stayed for nine years without performing Ḥajj. Then an announcement was made to the people in the tenth year that the Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) was performing Ḥajj. A large number of people came to Medina, all of them desiring to follow the Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) and act according to his actions. The Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) set out, and we set out with him until we reached Dhū al-Ḥulayfah. Asmāʾ bint ʿUmays gave birth to Muḥammad bin Abī Bakr, and she sent word to the Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ): ‘What should I do?’ He replied, ‘Bathe, bandage [your private parts] with a cloth, and assume iḥrām.’”

The Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) prayed in the mosque, then mounted al-Qaṣwāʾ until his camel stood upright with him on the Beyḍāʾ. Jābir said: “I looked as far as my gaze could reach in front of him—of riders and pedestrians—and to his right like that, and to his left like that, and behind him like that. The Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) was among us, upon him the Qurʾān was being revealed, and he knew its interpretation. Whatever he did of anything, we did it.”

The Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) began the talbiyah with the declaration of Tawḥīd: “Labbyka Allāhumma labbyk, labbyk lā sharīka laka labbyk, inna al-ḥamda wa al-niʿmata laka wa al-mulk, lā sharīka lak (At Your service, O Allah, at Your service. At Your service, You have no partner, at Your service. Indeed the praise, the grace, and the dominion are Yours, You have no partner).” The people also made the talbiyah with this very phrase which they proclaimed, and the Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) did not reject any of it, but the Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) adhered to his own talbiyah. Jābir said: “We did not intend anything other than Ḥajj; we were not acquainted with ʿUmrah. But when we came to the House with him, he touched the corner, walked quickly for three [rounds], and walked normally for four. Then he advanced to the Station of Abraham and recited:

{And take the Station of Abraham as a place of prayer}
He placed the Station between himself and the House.” My father said that Ibn Nuflayr and ʿUthmān said—and I do not know him to have mentioned it except from the Prophet (ﷺ). Sulaymān said: “I do not know that he mentioned it except saying: ‘The Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) used to recite in the two rakʿahs
{Say, He is Allah, the One}
and
{Say, O disbelievers}
.’”

Then he returned to the House and touched the corner, then went out through the gate to al-Ṣafā. When he drew near al-Ṣafā, he recited:

{Indeed, al-Ṣafā and al-Marwah are among the symbols of Allah}
and said, “We begin with what Allah began with.” So he began with al-Ṣafā, ascended it until he could see the House, declared the greatness of Allah, proclaimed His oneness, and said: “Lā ilāha illallāhu waḥdahu lā sharīka lahu, lahul-mulku wa lahul-ḥamdu, yuḥyī wa yumīt, wa huwa ʿalā kulli shay'in qadīr. Lā ilāha illallāhu waḥdahu, anjaza waʿdahu, wa naṣara ʿabdahu, wa hazama al-aḥzāba waḥdah (There is no god but Allah alone, Who has no partner. His is the dominion and His is the praise, He gives life and causes death, and He is over all things competent. There is no god but Allah alone, He fulfilled His promise, helped His servant, and defeated the confederates alone).” Then he supplicated between that, saying something like this three times. Then he descended towards al-Marwah until when his feet descended into the bottom of the valley, he ran; and when he ascended, he walked until he reached al-Marwah. He did at al-Marwah what he had done at al-Ṣafā. When it was the end of the ṭawāf on al-Marwah, he said: “If I had known of my affair what I came to know later, I would not have brought the sacrificial animals and would have made it an ʿumrah. So whoever among you does not have a sacrificial animal, let him terminate his iḥrām and make it an ʿumrah.”

All the people terminated their iḥrām and shortened their hair, except the Prophet (ﷺ) and those who had sacrificial animals with them. Surāqah bin Jushum stood up and said, “O Messenger of Allāh, is this for our year this year or forever?” The Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) interwined his fingers in the other and said, “The ʿumrah has entered into the Ḥajj”—he said this twice—“No, but for ever and ever, no, but for ever and ever.”

ʿAlī arrived from Yemen with the sacrificial camels of the Prophet (ﷺ) and found Fāṭimah among those who had terminated their iḥrām. She had worn dyed garments, used kohl, and ʿAlī disapproved of that for her, saying, “Who ordered you to do this?” She said, “My father.” ʿAlī used to say in Iraq: “I went to the Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ), seeking a ruling concerning what Fāṭimah had done and complaining to him about what she mentioned, and I informed him that I disapproved of that for her. He said, ‘She has spoken the truth, she has spoken the truth. What did you say when you assumed iḥrām for Ḥajj?’ I said, ‘O Allah, I assume iḥrām for what the Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) assumed iḥrām for.’ He said, ‘Indeed, I have the sacrificial animal with me, so do not terminate your iḥrām.’” The total of the sacrificial animals that ʿAlī brought from Yemen and that which the Prophet (ﷺ) brought from Medina was one hundred. All the people terminated their iḥrām and shortened their hair, except the Prophet (ﷺ) and those who had sacrificial animals.

When it was the Day of Tarwiyah, they headed towards Mina, and they assumed iḥrām for Ḥajj. The Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) mounted, prayed in Mina the Zuhr, ʿAṣr, Maghrib, ʿIshāʾ, and Fajr prayers. Then he waited a little until the sun rose, and he ordered a tent of hair to be set up for him at Namrah. The Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) set out, and Quraysh had no doubt that he would stop at the Mashʿar al-Ḥarām in Muzdalifah, just as Quraysh used to do in the pre-Islamic period. But the Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) passed on until he came to ʿArafah and found that the tent had been set up for him at Namrah. He dismounted there until the sun passed the meridian; he ordered that al-Qaṣwāʾ be saddled, and he mounted it until he came to the bottom of the valley. He addressed the people, saying: “Indeed, your blood and your property are sacred to you, like the sanctity of this day of yours, in this month of yours, in this land of yours. Behold! Everything from the pre-Islamic period is placed beneath my feet, and the blood-vengeance of the pre-Islamic period is abolished. The first blood-vengeance I abolish is our blood”—ʿUthmān said: “The blood of Ibn Rabīʿah”—and Sulaymān said: “The blood of Rabīʿah bin al-Ḥārith bin ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib” (some of them said: He was a nursing infant among Banū Saʿd, and Hudhayl killed him). “And the usury of the pre-Islamic period is abolished, and the first usury I abolish is our usury, the usury of al-ʿAbbās bin ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib; it is all abolished. Fear Allah regarding women, for you have taken them by the trust of Allah and made their private parts lawful by the word of Allah. It is your right over them that they do not allow anyone you dislike to tread your beds. If they do that, strike them lightly without causing injury. And they have a right to their provision and clothing from you in a fitting manner. Indeed, I have left among you that which will not cause you to go astray after it if you hold fast to it: the Book of Allah. And you will be asked about me, so what will you say?” They said, “We bear witness that you have conveyed, fulfilled, and given sincere counsel.” Then he raised his index finger toward the sky and pointed it at the people, saying, “O Allah, bear witness! O Allah, bear witness! O Allah, bear witness!” three times.

Then Bilāl gave the adhān, then the iqāmah, and he prayed Zuhr. Then he gave the iqāmah and prayed ʿAṣr, and did not pray anything between them. Then he mounted al-Qaṣwāʾ until he came to the standing place, made the belly of his camel al-Qaṣwāʾ face the rocks, placed the path of the pedestrians in front of him, and faced the qiblah. He remained standing until the sun set, the yellow light had somewhat gone, and the solar disc had disappeared. He seated Usāmah behind him and pushed on, while the Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) pulled the reins of al-Qaṣwāʾ so tightly that its head touched the fleshy part of its saddle. He was pointing with his right hand, saying, “O people, calmness! Calmness!” Whenever he came to a hill from among the hills, he would loosen its reins slightly until it climbed up, until he came to Muzdalifah. He combined the Maghrib and ʿIshāʾ prayers there with one adhān and two iqāmahs, and did not perform any supererogatory prayer between them—according to ʿUthmān. Then the narrators agreed: Then the Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) lay down until dawn broke, and he prayed Fajr when dawn became clear—Sulaymān said: With a call to prayer and an iqāmah, then they agreed. Then he mounted al-Qaṣwāʾ until he came to the Mashʿar al-Ḥarām, and he ascended it. ʿUthmān and Sulaymān said: He faced the qiblah, praised Allah, magnified Him, and declared His oneness—ʿUthmān added: And declared His oneness—and he kept standing until it was very bright. The Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) set out quickly before the sun rose, and he seated al-Faḍl bin ʿAbbās behind him. He was a man with beautiful hair, white, and handsome. When the Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) set out, the women in their litters kept passing by quickly, and al-Faḍl began looking at them. The Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) placed his hand on al-Faḍl’s face, al-Faḍl turned his face to the other side, and the Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) moved his hand to the other side while al-Faḍl turned his face to the other side looking at them, until he came to Muḥassir. He urged [the camel] a little, then took the middle path that comes out at the greatest jamrah, until he came to the jamrah that is by the tree. He threw seven pebbles at it, pronouncing the takbīr with every pebble like the small pebbles thrown with the fingers. He threw them from the bottom of the valley.

Then the Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) departed to the place of slaughter and sacrificed sixty-three [camels] with his hand. Then he ordered ʿAlī, and he sacrificed the remainder of what was left, and associated him in his sacrificial animals. Then he ordered that a piece from each camel be taken, put in a pot, and cooked. Both of them ate from its meat and drank from its broth. Sulaymān said: Then he mounted. Then the Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) went quickly to the House and prayed Zuhr in Makkah. He came to Banū ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib while they were drawing water at Zamzam and said, “Draw water, O Banū ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib; were it not that the people would overwhelm you regarding your drawing of water, I would draw water with you.” They handed him a bucket, and he drank from it.

The Rites of Hajj (Kitab Al-Manasik Wa'l-Hajj)

Sunan Abi Dawud 1905 - A comprehensive narration detailing the Prophet's Farewell Hajj

Historical Context & Significance

The Prophet ﷺ performed Hajj only once after migration, in the 10th year of Hijrah, known as Hajjat al-Wada (Farewell Pilgrimage). This occurred after nine years in Medina without performing Hajj, making it particularly significant as it established the eternal rites of Islamic pilgrimage.

Jabir bin Abdullah's detailed account, transmitted through multiple reliable chains, provides the most complete record of the Prophet's Hajj rituals, serving as the primary reference for Islamic pilgrimage until the Day of Judgment.

Key Juridical Rulings

Ihram for Women in Postpartum: The case of Asma bint Umays establishes that women in postpartum bleeding enter ihram like other women, requiring purification bath and proper attire.

Tawaf Rituals: The Prophet demonstrated seven circuits around Kaaba - three at brisk pace showing vigor, four at normal pace, following the practice of Abraham.

Combining Hajj and Umrah (Qiran): The Prophet's declaration allowing people to convert their Hajj to Umrah established the permissibility of Tamattu pilgrimage, though he maintained Qiran due to his sacrificial animals.

Standing at Arafah: The Prophet's sermon at Arafah abolished pre-Islamic practices, established fundamental Islamic principles regarding life, property, usury, and women's rights.

Spiritual Dimensions

The narration emphasizes the Prophet's humility in leading prayers with simple clothing, his concern for people's comfort during rituals, and his meticulous following of Divine guidance while allowing flexibility where appropriate.

The Prophet's intertwining fingers while declaring "Umrah has been incorporated in Hajj forever" symbolizes the permanent unification of these pilgrimages in Islamic law.

Scholarly Commentary

Classical scholars emphasize that this Hadith provides the complete methodology of Hajj, with Imam Nawawi noting it as the most comprehensive narration on pilgrimage rites. The chain of transmission through Ja'far al-Sadiq from his father Muhammad al-Baqir from Jabir represents one of the most authentic transmissions.

The Prophet's actions during this Hajj established the Sunnah for all future generations, with scholars deriving numerous legal rulings regarding ihram conditions, ritual sequences, and the flexibility Islam provides within prescribed boundaries.
