حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي ابْنُ وَهْبٍ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي عَمْرٌو، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ، عَنْ سِنَانِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ: مَا تَوَادَّ اثْنَانِ فِي اللهِ جَلَّ وَعَزَّ أَوْ فِي الإِسْلاَمِ، فَيُفَرِّقُ بَيْنَهُمَا إِلاَّ بِذَنْبٍ يُحْدِثُهُ أَحَدُهُمَا.

Anas reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: Whenever two people love one another for Allah’s sake—or in Islam—and then one of them commits a sin that causes a separation between them, that sin is what divides them.

The Arabic makes the sin committed by one of the two the cause of their separation; the translation preserves that condition.
