Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 402

Mu‘adha said: I heard Hisham ibn ‘Amir al-Ansari, Anas ibn Malik’s cousin—whose father was killed at Uhud—report that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: It is not lawful for a Muslim to cut off relations with another Muslim for more than three nights. So long as they remain estranged, both are turning away from the truth. The first of them to return to reconciliation has his being first to return as an expiation for him. If they die while still estranged, neither of them will ever enter the Garden. If one greets the other and he refuses to accept his greeting, an angel answers the one who offered it, while Satan answers the other.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The Arabic uses a repeated root in the clause about return: the first person to turn back has his going first as an expiation. The final contrast between the angel and Satan is kept close to the source.
