Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 1319b

‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Uthman read to us, from Abu Hamzah, from al-A‘mash, from Ibn Thabit, from Sulayman ibn Surad, who said: I was sitting with the Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace, while two men were insulting one another. One of them turned red in the face and his neck veins swelled. The Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: ‘I know a phrase that, if he said it, would make what he is experiencing go away.’ They said to him: ‘The Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: “Seek refuge in Allah from Satan, the accursed.”’ He said: ‘Am I possessed by madness?’
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
This is a variant of the preceding report. The source says that his neck veins swelled and the man rejected the suggestion by asking whether he was mad.
