Ata reported that Abu Hurayra said: If someone says, “May I enter?” without offering the greeting, tell him, “No, until you bring the key.” Ata asked, “The greeting of peace?” Abu Hurayra replied, “Yes.”

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • This report uses the greeting of peace as a metaphorical key to entry.

  • حَتَّى تَأْتِيَ بِالْمِفْتَاحِ

The witness truncates the instruction to refuse entry until the visitor brings the key, then omits Ata’s question and Abu Hurayra’s confirmation that the key is the greeting.

Should the full exchange about the greeting as the key be restored?
