Abu al-Walid said: Shu‘ba related to us, from al-Miqdam ibn Shurayh, who said: I heard my father say: I heard ‘A’isha say: I was riding a camel that was difficult to control and began striking it. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Be gentle, for gentleness is not in anything without adorning it, and it is not removed from anything without marring it.”

Sadaqa related to us; Ibn ‘Ulayya informed us, from al-Jurayri, from Abu Nadra, who said: A man among us, called Jabir—or Juwaybir—said: “During ‘Umar’s caliphate, I sought something I needed from him. I arrived in Madina at night and went to him in the morning. I had been given intelligence and eloquence—or, he said, speech. I spoke about this world, making it seem insignificant, and left it as though it were worth nothing. Beside him was a man with white hair and white clothes. When I had finished, he said, ‘All you said was measured, except for your disparagement of this world. Do you know what this world is? In this world is what carries us—or, he said, our provision—to the Hereafter, and in it are our deeds for which we will be recompensed in the Hereafter.’” He said: “Then a man more knowledgeable than I about this world spoke about it. I said, ‘Commander of the Faithful, who is this man beside you?’ He said, ‘The leader of the Muslims, Ubayy ibn Ka‘b.’”

‘Ali said: Marwan related to us; Qinan ibn ‘Abd Allah al-Nahmi related to us; ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn ‘Awsaja related to us, from al-Bara’ ibn ‘Azib, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Arrogant self-exaltation is evil.”

Abu Nu‘aym said: Hanash ibn al-Harith related to us, from his father, who said: One of our men’s mare gave birth, and he slaughtered it, saying, “Will I live long enough to ride this?” Then ‘Umar’s letter came to us: “Take proper care of what Allah has provided you, for there is room to breathe in the matter.”

Khalid ibn Makhlad al-Bajali said: Sulayman ibn Bilal related to us; Yahya ibn Sa‘id informed me; Muhammad ibn Yahya ibn Hibban informed me, from Dawud ibn Abi Dawud, who said: ‘Abd Allah ibn Salam said to me: “If you hear that the Dajjal has emerged while you are planting a young palm, do not hurry to abandon it, for people will have a livelihood after that.”

Isma‘il ibn Abi Uways said: Ibn Abi al-Zinad related to me, from Musa ibn ‘Uqba, from Abu al-Zubayr, from Jabir, who heard the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, on the pulpit. He looked toward Yemen and said: “O Allah, turn their hearts toward us.” He looked toward Iraq and said the same, then looked toward every horizon and said the same. He said: “O Allah, provide us with the earth’s produce, and bless our mudd and our sa‘.”
