Amr ibn Awn and Musaddad narrated to us. They said: Abu Awana narrated to us, from Firas, from Abu Salih, from Zadhan, from Ibn Umar, who said: I heard the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, say: 'If someone slaps his servant or strikes him with a punishment he has not incurred, its expiation is to set him free.'

أَوْ ضَرَبَهُ حَدًّا لَمْ يَأْتِهِ،
The phrase literally refers to striking/punishing him with a ḥadd that he has not committed or incurred; the exact legal sense is compressed.
Should this be rendered as an undeserved disciplinary punishment, or retained more literally as a ḥadd?
