حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْجُعْفِيُّ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي دَاوُدُ بْنُ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ مَوْلَى بَنِي هَاشِمٍ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَي عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَتْنِي جَدَّتِي، عَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم كَانَ فِي بَيْتِهَا، فَدَعَا وَصِيفَةً لَهُ أَوْ لَهَا فَأَبْطَأَتْ، فَاسْتَبَانَ الْغَضَبُ فِي وَجْهِهِ، فَقَامَتْ أُمُّ سَلَمَةَ إِلَى الْحِجَابِ، فَوَجَدَتِ الْوَصِيفَةَ تَلْعَبُ، وَمَعَهُ سِوَاكٌ، فَقَالَ: لَوْلاَ خَشْيَةُ الْقَوَدِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ، لَأَوْجَعْتُكِ بِهَذَا السِّوَاكِ.

Abd Allah ibn Muhammad al-Ju‘fi narrated to us. He said: Abu Usama narrated to us. He said: Dawud ibn Abi Abd Allah, the client of Banu Hashim, narrated to me. He said: Abd al-Rahman ibn Muhammad narrated to me. He said: My grandmother informed me, from Umm Salama: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was in her home. He called for a young servant, either his or hers, and she was delayed. Anger became apparent on his face. Umm Salama went to the partition and found the young woman playing, with a siwak. He said, ‘Were it not for fear of retaliation on the Day of Resurrection, I would have struck you with this siwak.’
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The Arabic leaves the servant’s affiliation open: she may have belonged to the Prophet or to Umm Salama. The phrase khashyatu al-qawad refers to fear of retaliation. The wording says the servant was playing and that there was a siwak with her; it does not specify precisely how she held it.
فَدَعَا وَصِيفَةً لَهُ أَوْ لَهَا فَأَبْطَأَتْ،
