‘Amir said: Abu Jubayra ibn al-Dahhak said, ‘This verse was revealed concerning us, the Banu Salima: “Do not call one another by offensive nicknames” (Qur’an 49:11). The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) came to us, and every man among us had two names. The Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) would call out, “O so-and-so!” and they would say, “Messenger of Allah, he is angered by that name.”’

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The Arabic quotes the clause about offensive nicknames, rather than the broader ‘do not find fault with one another’ wording in the English witness.

The Arabic quotation is the Qur’anic clause about not using insulting nicknames; the English witness gives a different clause from the same verse.

Should this quotation follow the Arabic wording as rendered here or the English witness’s alternate clause?
