Translation

Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.

‘Ikrima said: I do not know which of the two—either Ibn ‘Abbas or his cousin—was preparing food for his companion. While the young woman was working in front of them, one of them said to her, ‘Adulteress!’ He replied, ‘Stop! If she does not exact the prescribed punishment from you in this world, she will exact it from you in the Hereafter.’ The man said, ‘What if it is as I said?’ He replied, ‘Allah does not love the one who is foul-mouthed and given to obscenity.’

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The source does not identify which of the two men was preparing food, and says ‘his cousin’ rather than naming Ibn ‘Umar. The final phrase describes someone who is excessively obscene in speech.

The Arabic has Ibn ‘Abbas or his cousin, without identifying that cousin by name; the English witness names Ibn ‘Umar.

Should an editor preserve the Arabic’s unspecified ‘his cousin’ rather than identify the cousin as Ibn ‘Umar?

The Arabic states that she will exact hadd from you in the Hereafter if she does not do so in this world; the witness inserts an explanatory parenthesis for slander not present here.

Should the translation retain the source’s unqualified wording for hadd without the witness’s parenthetical specification?
