Hisham ibn ‘Ammar narrated to us: Rudayh ibn ‘Atiyya narrated to us: Ibrahim ibn Abi ‘Abla narrated to us from Umm al-Darda’, that a man came to her and said: A man spoke ill of you in ‘Abd al-Malik’s presence. She replied: If we are blamed for what is not in us, how often we have been praised for what is not in us!
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The Arabic uses the same phrase, ‘what is not in us,’ for both blame and praise; it does not say that she was merely suspected of something.
