Book 14, Hadith 272
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ صَالِحٍ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي اللَّيْثُ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي يَزِيدُ بْنُ الْهَادِ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ شُعَيْبٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ جَدِّهِ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَقُولُ: أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِأَحَبِّكُمْ إِلَيَّ، وَأَقْرَبِكُمْ مِنِّي مَجْلِسًا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ؟ فَسَكَتَ الْقَوْمُ، فَأَعَادَهَا مَرَّتَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلاَثًا، قَالَ الْقَوْمُ: نَعَمْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، قَالَ: أَحْسَنُكُمْ خُلُقًا.

‘Abd Allah ibn Salih narrated to us: al-Layth narrated to me: Yazid ibn al-Had narrated to me, from ‘Amr ibn Shu‘ayb, from his father, from his grandfather, who heard the Prophet ﷺ say: ‘Shall I tell you who among you is dearest to me and will be closest to me in seating on the Day of Resurrection?’ The people fell silent. He repeated it two or three times. The people said, ‘Yes, Messenger of Allah.’ He said, ‘Those of you with the best character.’

The source states ‘closest to me in seating’ (مَجْلِسًا), a compact expression for closeness in the gathering. The witness expands this as being seated closest.
