Muhammad ibn Salam narrated to us: Hushaym narrated to us, from ‘Abd al-Malik ibn ‘Umayr, who said: Warrad, the scribe of al-Mughira, narrated to us: Mu‘awiya wrote to al-Mughira ibn Shu‘ba, ‘Write to me something you heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.’ Al-Mughira wrote to him: ‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to forbid hearsay and idle talk, wasting wealth, excessive questioning, withholding and demanding, disobedience to mothers, and the burying of daughters alive.’
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The paired expression قيل وقال refers to circulating talk or hearsay. The compact منع وهات is difficult to render exactly; it conveys withholding and demanding/taking.
وَعَنْ مَنْعٍ وَهَاتِ
The paired nouns literally suggest withholding and saying ‘give!’/demanding; the precise scope is compressed.
Should this be rendered as ‘withholding and demanding’ or another established equivalent?
