Book 14, Hadith 299

‘Abd Allah ibn Yazid narrated to us: Musa ibn ‘Ali narrated to us: I heard my father say: I heard ‘Amr ibn al-‘As say: The Prophet ﷺ sent for me and told me to put on my clothes and weapons, then come to him. I did so and came to him while he was performing ablution. He looked up at me, then lowered his gaze. He said, ‘‘Amr, I intend to appoint you over an army, so that Allah may grant you spoils, and I have a good share of wealth in mind for you.’ I said, ‘I did not become Muslim out of desire for wealth; I became Muslim only out of desire for Islam, so that I might be with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.’ He said, ‘‘Amr, excellent is good wealth for a righteous person.’’
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The Arabic says he was offered a good share of wealth; the witness expands the final phrase with ‘legitimately acquired,’ which is not explicit in this report.
The Arabic says he would provide or seek for him a good/ample desire of wealth, without specifying a precise portion.
Should this remain general (‘a good share of wealth’) rather than specify a portion of spoils?
