‘Abd Allah ibn Raja’ and Hafs ibn ‘Umar both said: Shu‘bah narrated to us, from al-Hakam, from Ibrahim, from al-Aswad, who said: I asked ‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, “What would the Prophet ﷺ do with his family?” She replied, “He would be in the service of his family, and when the prayer time came, he would go out.”

Musa narrated to us; he said: Mahdi ibn Maymun narrated to us, from Hisham ibn ‘Urwah, from his father, who said: I asked ‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, “What would the Prophet ﷺ do in his house?” She replied, “He would mend his sandals and do what a man does in his house.”

Ishaq narrated to us; he said: ‘Abd Allah ibn al-Walid informed us, from Sufyan, from Hisham, from his father, who said: I asked ‘A’ishah, “What would the Prophet ﷺ do in his house?” She said, “What does one of you do in his house?” Then she said, “What one of you does in his house: he mends the sandal, patches the garment, and sews.”

‘Abd Allah narrated to us; he said: Mu‘awiyah ibn Salih narrated to me, from Yahya ibn Sa‘id, from ‘Amrah: ‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, was asked, “What would the Messenger of Allah ﷺ do in his house?” She replied, “He was a human being among human beings. He would delouse his garment and milk his sheep.”

Musaddad narrated to us; he said: Yahya ibn Sa‘id narrated to us, from Thawr, who said: Habib ibn ‘Ubayd narrated to me, from al-Miqdam ibn Ma‘dikarib—and he had met him—who said: The Prophet ﷺ said, “When one of you loves his brother, let him tell him that he loves him.”

Yahya ibn Bishr narrated to us; he said: Qabisah narrated to us; he said: Sufyan narrated to us, from Rabah, from Abu ‘Ubayd Allah, from Mujahid, who said: A man from among the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ met me and took me by the shoulder from behind. He said, “I love you.” I replied, “May the One for whose sake you love me love you.” He said, “Were it not that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘When a man loves another man, let him inform him that he loves him,’ I would not have told you.” Then he began proposing marriage to me, saying, “We have a young woman; indeed, she has a defect in one eye.”

Musa narrated to us; he said: Mubarak narrated to us; he said: Thabit narrated to us, from Anas, who said: The Prophet ﷺ said, “When two men love one another, the better of them is the one who loves his companion more.”

‘Abd Allah ibn Salih narrated to us; he said: Mu‘awiyah narrated to me, that Abu al-Zahiriyyah related to him, from Jubayr ibn Nufayr, from Mu‘adh ibn Jabal, who said: “If you love a brother, do not argue with him, do not treat him harshly, and do not pry into his affairs. Perhaps you will encounter an enemy of his who tells you something about him that is not true, and so divides you from him.”

Al-Muqri’ narrated to us; he said: ‘Abd al-Rahman narrated to us, from ‘Abd Allah ibn Yazid, from ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Amr, from the Prophet ﷺ, who said: “Whoever loves a brother for Allah, in Allah, and says, ‘I love you for Allah,’ they will both enter the Garden, and the one who loved for Allah will be higher in rank because of his love than the one whom he loved for His sake.”

Sa‘id ibn Abi Maryam narrated to us; he said: Muhammad ibn Muslim informed us; he said: ‘Amr ibn Dinar informed me, from Ibn Shihab, from ‘Iyad ibn Khalifah, from ‘Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, who heard him at Siffin say: “Intellect is in the heart, mercy is in the liver, compassion is in the spleen, and breath is in the lung.”

Sulayman ibn Harb narrated to us; he said: Hammad ibn Zayd narrated to us, from al-Sa‘qab ibn Zuhayr, from Zayd ibn Aslam, who said: I only know it through ‘Ata’ ibn Yasar, from ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Amr, who said: We were sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when a bedouin man wearing a garment of thick wool came and stood over the Prophet ﷺ. He said, “Your companion has brought every horseman low”—or he said, “wants to bring every horseman low”—“and raise every shepherd.” The Prophet ﷺ took hold of the front of his garment and said, “Am I to see you wearing the clothing of someone who has no sense?” Then he said: “When Allah’s Prophet Nuh ﷺ was near death, he said to his son, ‘I am giving you this counsel. I command you to two things and forbid you two things. I command you: “There is no god but Allah.” For if the seven heavens and the seven earths were placed on one pan of a balance, and “There is no god but Allah” were placed on the other, it would outweigh them. If the seven heavens and the seven earths were an unbroken ring, “There is no god but Allah” would shatter them. And “Glory be to Allah and praise belongs to Him,” for it is the prayer of everything, and through it everything is provided for. I forbid you associating partners with Allah and arrogance.’ I—or someone—said, ‘Messenger of Allah, we know what associating partners is; what is arrogance? Is it that one of us has a fine robe to wear?’ He replied, ‘No.’ He said, ‘Then is it that one of us has two fine sandals with fine straps?’ He replied, ‘No.’ He said, ‘Then is it that one of us has a mount to ride?’ He replied, ‘No.’ He said, ‘Then is it that one of us has companions who sit with him?’ He replied, ‘No.’ He said, ‘Messenger of Allah, then what is arrogance?’ He replied, ‘Rejecting the truth and looking down on people.’”

Musaddad narrated to us; he said: Yunus ibn al-Qasim, Abu ‘Umar al-Yamami, narrated to us; he said: ‘Ikrimah ibn Khalid narrated to us: I heard Ibn ‘Umar narrate from the Prophet ﷺ, who said: “Whoever considers himself great or walks with swagger will meet Allah, Mighty and Majestic, while He is angry with him.”

‘Abd al-‘Aziz ibn ‘Abd Allah narrated to us, from ‘Abd al-‘Aziz ibn Muhammad, from Muhammad ibn ‘Amr, from Abu Salamah, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “He is not arrogant who eats with his servant, rides a donkey in the markets, and ties up the sheep and milks it.”

Musa ibn Bahr narrated to us; he said: ‘Ali ibn Hashim ibn al-Barid narrated to us; he said: Salih, the seller of garments, narrated to us, from his grandmother, who said: I saw ‘Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, buy dates for a dirham and carry them in his wrap. I said to him—or a man said to him—“Let me carry them for you, Commander of the Faithful.” He replied, “No. The father of a family has greater right to carry them.”

‘Umar narrated to us; he said: my father narrated to us; he said: al-A‘mash narrated to us; he said: Abu Ishaq narrated to us, from Abu Muslim al-Agharr, who related to him, from Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri and Abu Hurayrah, from the Prophet ﷺ, who said: “Might is My lower garment, and greatness is My cloak. Whoever contends with Me over either of them, I will punish.”

‘Ali ibn Hujr narrated to us; he said: Isma‘il narrated to us; he said: Abu Rawahah Yazid ibn Ayham narrated to me, from al-Haytham ibn Malik al-Ta’i, who said: I heard al-Nu‘man ibn Bashir say from the pulpit: “Satan has snares and traps. Among Satan’s snares and traps are exulting in Allah’s blessings, boasting of Allah’s gifts, acting arrogantly toward Allah’s servants, and following one’s desire in matters that are not for Allah.”

‘Ali narrated to us; he said: Sufyan narrated to us, from Abu al-Zinad, from al-A‘raj, from Abu Hurayrah, from the Prophet ﷺ, who said: “The Garden and the Fire disputed”—and Sufyan also said, “contended with one another.” The Fire said, ‘The tyrants will enter me, and the arrogant will enter me.’ The Garden said, ‘The weak will enter me, and the poor will enter me.’ Allah, Blessed and Exalted, said to the Garden, ‘You are My mercy; through you I show mercy to whom I will.’ Then He said to the Fire, ‘You are My punishment; through you I punish whom I will. Each of you will be filled.’”

Ishaq narrated to us; he said: Muhammad ibn Fudayl narrated to us; he said: al-Walid ibn Jami‘ narrated to us, from Abu Salamah ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman, who said: The Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ were neither pretentious nor given to affected piety. They would recite poetry to one another in their gatherings and speak of matters from their pre-Islamic days. But when one of them was asked to act on something concerning Allah, his eyes would roll about as if he were mad.

Muhammad ibn al-Muthanna narrated to us; he said: ‘Abd al-Wahhab narrated to us; he said: Hisham narrated to us, from Muhammad, from Abu Hurayrah: A man came to the Prophet ﷺ, and he was handsome. He said, “Beauty has been made beloved to me, and I have been given what you see, to the point that I do not like anyone to surpass me—not even by a sandal strap”—or he said, “by a red sandal thong.” Is that arrogance? He replied, “No. Rather, arrogance is rejecting the truth and looking down on people.”

Muhammad ibn Salam narrated to us; he said: ‘Abd Allah ibn al-Mubarak informed us, from Muhammad ibn ‘Ajlan, from ‘Amr ibn Shu‘ayb, from his father, from his grandfather, from the Prophet ﷺ, who said: “On the Day of Resurrection, the arrogant will be gathered like tiny particles in the form of men, with humiliation enveloping them from every side. They will be driven to a prison in Hell called Bulas. The fire of fires will loom over them, and they will be made to drink the exudate of the people of the Fire: the clay of corruption.”
