‘Abd al-‘Aziz ibn ‘Abdullah related to us, saying: al-Darawardi related to me, from Ja‘far, from his father, from Jabir ibn ‘Abdullah, that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, passed through the market, entering from part of al-‘Aliya, with people on both sides of him. He passed by a young goat with defective ears, reached out, and took it by the ear. Then he said: “Who among you would like this for a dirham?” They said: “We would not want it for anything. What would we do with it?” He said: “Would you like it to be yours?” They said: “No.” He asked them that three times. They said: “No, by Allah! If it were alive, it would be defective because it lacks two ears; so how could we want it when it is dead?” He said: “By Allah, this world is less valuable to Allah than this is to you.”
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The text glosses أَسَكّ as one that “does not have two ears”; it does not specify whether one or both ears are absent.
The Arabic identifies an ear-defective young goat; it does not call it dead until later, and its gloss says only that it lacks two ears without specifying whether one or both are absent.
Should the witness’s early “dead” and specific “one-eared” details be removed?
