Jabir ibn Abdullah said: I had heard a report from a man among the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ, so I bought a camel, loaded my provisions on it, and traveled for a month until I reached Syria. There I found Abdullah ibn Unays. I sent him word that Jabir was at the door. The messenger returned and asked, “Jabir ibn Abdullah?” I said yes. He came out and embraced me. I said, “A report reached me that I had not heard. I feared that I might die—or you might die—before I heard it.” He said: I heard the Prophet ﷺ say, “Allah will gather the servants—or the people—barefoot, naked, uncircumcised, and with nothing.” I asked, “What does ‘with nothing’ mean?” He replied, “They will have nothing with them.” He continued: “He will call them with a voice heard by those far away”—I think he said, “as clearly as by those nearby”—“saying: ‘I am the King. No one among the people of Paradise should enter Paradise while someone among the people of the Fire seeks redress from him for an injustice; and no one among the people of the Fire should enter the Fire while someone among the people of Paradise seeks redress from him for an injustice.’” I asked, “How, when we will come to Allah barefoot, naked, and with nothing?” He replied, “Through good deeds and bad deeds.”

  • The word بُهْمًا is explained in the report itself as having nothing with them; the translation retains that explanation rather than selecting a more specific lexical sense.
