Ibn Umar said: We were on an expedition, and the people broke and fled. We said, “How can we face the Prophet ﷺ after fleeing?” Then the verse was revealed: “except one who withdraws to maneuver for battle” (Qur’an 8:16). We said, “We will not return to Madinah, lest anyone see us.” Then we said, “Perhaps we should go back.” The Prophet ﷺ came out after the dawn prayer. We said, “We are the fugitives.” He replied, “Rather, you are those who return to the fight.” We kissed his hand, and he said, “I am your supporting group.”

The final phrase أَنَا فِئَتُكُمْ means “I am your group/force” in the sense of a supporting body; the witness’s “group” is retained in a natural rendering.
