Looking after children
This hadith from Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 97 emphasizes the importance of caring for children, particularly orphans. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "I and the caretaker of an orphan will be in Paradise like these two," and he gestured with his index and middle fingers. This indicates the immense reward for those who undertake the responsibility of raising and protecting orphaned children.
From a classical Islamic perspective, this narration highlights several key principles: First, it demonstrates the high status granted to those who show compassion to vulnerable members of society. Second, it illustrates the concept of spiritual proximity - the caretaker of an orphan will be close to the Prophet in Paradise. Third, it serves as practical guidance for Muslim communities to establish systems of orphan care.
Scholars have explained that this care extends beyond mere provision of material needs to include emotional support, proper education, and Islamic upbringing. The gesture with two fingers signifies the inseparable closeness between the Prophet and the orphan's guardian in the hereafter, making this among the most meritorious acts in Islam.
