‘Amr ibn Khalid narrated to us, saying: Zuhayr narrated to us, saying: ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Uthman narrated to us, saying: Isma‘il ibn ‘Ubayd informed me, from his father ‘Ubayd, from Rifa‘ah ibn Rafi‘, that the Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace, said to ‘Umar, may Allah be pleased with him: ‘Gather your people for me.’ So he gathered them. When they arrived at the Prophet’s door, ‘Umar entered and said: ‘I have gathered my people for you.’ The Ansar heard this and said: ‘Revelation has come down concerning Quraysh.’ Those who wanted to hear and see what would be said to them came. The Prophet came out and stood among them, then said: ‘Is there anyone among you who is not of you?’ They said: ‘Yes, our ally, our sister’s son, and our clients are among us.’ The Prophet said: ‘Our ally is one of us, our sister’s son is one of us, and our clients are one of us.’ And you hear me say: ‘My allies among you are the God-fearing. If you are those, then so be it; otherwise, take heed. On the Day of Resurrection, people will come with deeds, while you will come with burdens, and you will be turned away.’ Then he called out: ‘O people!’ He raised his hands and placed them on the heads of Quraysh, and said: ‘O people, Quraysh are people of trust. Whoever wrongs them’—Zuhayr said, ‘I think he said: or brings calamities upon them’—‘Allah will cast him down upon his nostrils.’ He said this three times.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The transmitter explicitly expresses uncertainty about the word الْعَوَاثِرَ; the translation preserves that uncertainty and gives a tentative sense rather than treating it as certain.

The transmitter marks the word الْعَوَاثِرَ as uncertain; its precise sense is not established in the source record.

What is the best-supported meaning of الْعَوَاثِرَ here, and should a different tentative gloss be used?

الأثقال literally means burdens or heavy loads; the witness also interprets it as burdens, but the intended referent is not specified.

Should the physical burden image be retained without an explanatory gloss?
