Musa related to us: Sulayman ibn al-Mughirah related to us, from Thabit, who said: Anas said: When wine was forbidden, the people of Madinah had no drink they liked more than one made from dates and fresh, unripe dates. I was serving it to the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and grant him peace, while they were with Abu Talhah. A man passed by and said, ‘Wine has been forbidden.’ They did not say, ‘When?’ or ‘Let us wait and see.’ They said, ‘Anas, pour it away!’ Then they stayed with Umm Sulaym until they had cooled down and bathed. Umm Sulaym then perfumed them, and they went to the Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace, and found that the news was as the man had said. Anas said: They never tasted it again afterward.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The Arabic says أهرقها, “pour it away,” rather than “break them”; the pronoun refers to the drink.

  • يَا أَنَسُ، أَهْرِقْهَا

The verb أهرق means to pour out, and the object is the drink just mentioned.

None; the translation follows the Arabic wording.
