Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 1243

‘Amr ibn Khalid related to us: Abu al-Malih related to us: I heard Maymun (meaning Ibn Mihran) say: I asked Nafi‘, ‘Would Ibn ‘Umar invite people to a banquet?’ He replied: ‘Once one of his camels was injured, so we slaughtered it. Then he said, “Gather the people of Madinah for me.”’ Nafi‘ said: I asked, ‘Abu ‘Abd al-Rahman, what for? We have no bread.’ He said: ‘O Allah, praise belongs to You. Here is meat on the bone, and here is broth’—or he said, ‘broth and pieces of meat.’ ‘Whoever wishes may eat, and whoever wishes may leave it.’
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The report preserves a variant order for the broth and meat phrase. عُراق refers to meat still on the bone; بضع denotes pieces or portions of meat.
هَذَا عُرَاقٌ، وَهَذَا مَرَقٌ، أَوْ قَالَ: مَرَقٌ وَبَضْعٌ
The Arabic preserves both a variant sequence and different nouns for the food served.
Should عُراق be rendered as meat left on the bone or as ribs?
