Muhammad ibn ‘Uqba related to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Ibrahim al-Yashkuri al-Basri related to us, saying: My grandmother, Umm Kulthum bint Thumama, related to me that she came as a pilgrim. Her brother, al-Mukhariq ibn Thumama, said to her: “Go to ‘A’isha and ask her about ‘Uthman ibn ‘Affan, for people have said much about him among us.” She said: “I went to her and said: ‘One of your sons sends you greetings of peace and asks you about ‘Uthman ibn ‘Affan.’” She said: “And upon him be peace and the mercy of Allah.” She said: “As for me, I testify that I saw ‘Uthman in this house on a sweltering night, while the Prophet of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and Jibril were there as revelation was being sent to him. The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was tapping the palm—or shoulder—of Ibn ‘Affan with his hand, saying: ‘Write, ‘Uthman!’ Allah would not grant His Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, such a standing except to a man whom He honors. Whoever insults Ibn ‘Affan, upon him is the curse of Allah.’”
