Qabisa related to us, saying: Sufyan related to us, from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman, the client of the family of Talha, from Kurayb, from Ibn ‘Abbas, that Juwayriyya’s name had been Barra, and the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, named her Juwayriyya.

‘Amr ibn Marzuq related to us, saying: Shu‘ba related to us, from ‘Ata ibn Abi Maymuna, from Abu Rafi‘, from Abu Hurayra, who said: Maymuna’s name had been Barra, and the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, named her Maymuna.

‘Umar ibn Hafs related to us, saying: My father related to us, saying: al-A‘mash related to us, saying: Abu Sufyan related to us, from Jabir, from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, who said: “If I live, Allah willing, I shall forbid my community from anyone among them being named Baraka, Nafi‘, or Aflah—and I do not know whether he said Rafi‘ or not. Someone would ask, ‘Is Baraka here?’ and be told, ‘There is no Baraka here.’” The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, passed away without forbidding that.

Al-Makki related to us, saying: Ibn Jurayj related to us, from Abu al-Zubayr, who heard Jabir ibn ‘Abdullah say: The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, intended to forbid people from being named Ya‘la, Baraka, Nafi‘, Yasar, Aflah, and the like. Then he fell silent about them and said nothing further.

Muhammad ibn al-Muthanna related to us, saying: ‘Umar ibn Yunus ibn al-Qasim related to us, saying: ‘Ikrima related to us, from Simak Abu Zumayl, who said: ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas related to me, saying: ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, related to me, saying: When the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, withdrew from his wives, there I was with Rabah, the Messenger of Allah’s servant. I called: “Rabah, ask permission for me to see the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.”

Abu Nu‘aym related to us, saying: Dawud ibn Qays related to us, saying: Musa ibn Yasar related to me: I heard Abu Hurayra report from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, who said: “Name yourselves with my name, but do not use my kunya, for I am Abu al-Qasim.”

Adam related to us, saying: Shu‘ba related to us, from Humayd al-Tawil, from Anas ibn Malik, who said: The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was in the market when a man said: “O Abu al-Qasim!” The Prophet turned toward him. The man said: “Messenger of Allah, I was only calling this other man.” The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: “Name yourselves with my name, but do not use my kunya.”

Abu Nu‘aym related to us, saying: Yahya ibn Abi al-Haytham al-Qattan related to us, saying: Yusuf ibn ‘Abdullah ibn Sallam related to me, saying: The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, named me Yusuf, seated me on his lap, and stroked my head.

Abu al-Walid related to us, saying: Shu‘ba related to us, from Sulayman, Mansur, and so-and-so, who heard Salim ibn Abi al-Ja‘d, from Jabir ibn ‘Abdullah, who said: A boy was born to one of our men among the Ansar, and he wanted to name him Muhammad. Shu‘ba said in the narration of Mansur: The Ansari said: “I carried him on my neck and brought him to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.” In the narration of Sulayman, it says: A boy was born to him, and they wanted to name him Muhammad. He said: “Name yourselves with my name, but do not use my kunya, for I have only been made a distributor, distributing among you.” Husayn said: “I was sent as a distributor, distributing among you.”

Muhammad ibn al-‘Ala related to us, saying: Abu Usama related to us, from Burayd ibn ‘Abdullah ibn Abi Burda, from his father, from Abu Musa, who said: A boy was born to me, and I brought him to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. He named him Ibrahim, performed tahnik for him with a date, prayed for blessing for him, and handed him back to me. He was Abu Musa’s eldest child.

‘Ali related to us, saying: ‘Abd al-Razzaq related to us, saying: Ma‘mar informed us, from al-Zuhri, from Sa‘id ibn al-Musayyab, from his father, from his grandfather, that he came to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, who said: “What is your name?” He said: “Hazn [roughness].” He said: “You are Sahl [ease].” He replied: “I will not change a name my father gave me.” Ibn al-Musayyab said: “Roughness remained among us thereafter.”
