'Isam ibn Khalid related to us: Artah ibn al-Mundhir related to us: I heard—meaning Abu 'Amir al-Himsi—say: Thawban used to say: ‘There are no two men who sever relations for more than three days, then one of them dies while they remain in that state of estrangement, without both of them perishing. And there is no neighbour who wrongs and overpowers his neighbour until that drives him to leave his home, without [the wrongdoer] perishing.’

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The source presents this as Thawban's saying, not as a prophetic quotation.

The Arabic sequence shifts from one dying to both dying while still estranged; the English preserves that sequence but the exact relation between the clauses is awkward.

Should this clause be reviewed against a verified parallel or commentary before finalizing its syntax?
