Ahmad ibn Humayd related to us: Muhammad ibn Fudayl related to us, from Muhammad ibn Sa'd, who said: I heard Abu Zabya al-Kala'i say: I heard al-Miqdad ibn al-Aswad say: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, asked his Companions about fornication. They said, ‘It is forbidden; Allah and His Messenger have forbidden it.’ He said, ‘For a man to commit fornication with ten women is less serious for him than to commit fornication with his neighbour's wife.’ He then asked them about theft. They said, ‘It is forbidden; Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and His Messenger have forbidden it.’ He said, ‘For him to steal from ten households is less serious for him than to steal from his neighbour's house.’
