Bishr ibn Muhammad related to us: 'Abdullah informed us: Shu'bah informed us, from Abu 'Imran al-Jawni, from 'Abdullah ibn al-Samit, from Abu Dharr, who said: ‘My close friend, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, enjoined three things upon me: Listen and obey, even if [the one you are to obey is] a slave with mutilated limbs; when you make broth, add plenty of water, then look for a household among your neighbours and give them a fair share of it; and pray each prayer at its proper time. If you find that the imam has already prayed, you will have secured your prayer; otherwise, it will be a supererogatory prayer.’

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The Arabic leaves the person who is to be obeyed implicit in the first injunction; the bracketed words make that ellipsis readable without adding them to the translated source.

  • أَسْمَعُ وَأُطِيعُ وَلَوْ لِعَبْدٍ مُجَدَّعِ الأَطْرَافِ

The person to whom obedience is directed is not named in this clause; the translation supplies an elliptical referent in brackets.

Should the target translation retain this ellipsis more literally, or render the implied authority explicitly?
