'Abd Allah ibn Salih narrated to us. He said: al-Layth narrated to me. He said: Khalid ibn Yazid narrated to me, from Sa'id ibn Abi Hilal, from Abu Hazim, from Abu Murrah, the client of 'Aqil: Marwan used to appoint Abu Hurayrah as his deputy, and Abu Hurayrah used to stay at Dhu'l-Hulayfah. His mother would be in one house and he in another. When he wanted to go out, he would stand at her door and say: “Peace be upon you, dear mother, and Allah's mercy and blessings.” She would say: “And peace be upon you, my dear son, and Allah's mercy and blessings.” He would say: “May Allah have mercy on you, as you raised me when I was little.” She would say: “May Allah have mercy on you, as you were dutiful to me when you grew up.” Then, when he wanted to enter, he would do the same.
