Muhammad related to us: ‘Abd Allah informed us: Yahya ibn Ayyub related to us: ‘Uqayl ibn Khalid related to me, that Sa‘id ibn Sulayman ibn Zayd ibn Thabit related to him, from his father, from his grandfather Zayd ibn Thabit: ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab once came to ask permission to see him. He was admitted while Zayd’s head was in the hands of a young woman belonging to him, who was combing his hair. He pulled his head away, but ‘Umar said to him: ‘Let her comb it.’ He said: ‘Commander of the Faithful, if you had sent for me, I would have come to you.’ ‘Umar said: ‘I am the one who needs something.’
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The sequence preserves that Zayd initially withdrew his head when ‘Umar entered, then ‘Umar invited him to continue being groomed.
