Farwa and Ahmad ibn Ishkab related to us, both saying: al-Qasim ibn Malik al-Muzani related to us, from ‘Asim ibn Kulayb, from Abu Burda, who said: I entered upon Abu Musa while he was in the house of his daughter, Umm al-Fadl bint al-‘Abbas. I sneezed, but he did not invoke mercy for me. She sneezed, and he invoked mercy for her. I told my mother. When he came to her, she reproached him and said: “My son sneezed and you did not invoke mercy for him, but she sneezed and you invoked mercy for her.” He said to her: “I heard the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say: ‘When one of you sneezes and praises Allah, invoke mercy for him; if he does not praise Allah, do not invoke mercy for him.’ Your son sneezed but did not praise Allah, so I did not invoke mercy for him; she sneezed and praised Allah, so I invoked mercy for her.” She said: “You did well.”
