Commentary on the Hadith

This profound narration establishes the supreme status of supplication (du'a) in the sight of Allah Almighty. The phrase "nothing is dearer" indicates that du'a occupies the highest position among all acts of worship, surpassing even obligatory prayers and fasting in Allah's love for it.

Scholars explain that this excellence stems from du'a being the essence of servitude ('ubudiyyah), combining complete humility with absolute dependence on the Creator. When a servant raises their hands in supplication, they manifest their poverty and need before the All-Sufficient Lord.

Ibn al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy upon him, noted that du'a contains within it the core of Tawhid - acknowledging that only Allah can grant benefit or remove harm. This is why the Prophet ﷺ said in another narration: "Du'a is worship itself."

Practical Implications

This hadith teaches us to make du'a frequently in all circumstances - in times of ease and difficulty, in health and sickness, in prosperity and adversity.

The scholar Al-Munawi commented that since nothing is more beloved to Allah than supplication, the believer should never despair of Allah's response, even if the answer is delayed. Sometimes the delay itself contains wisdom known only to the All-Wise.

Imam Al-Ghazali emphasized that one should supplicate with a present heart, complete humility, and certainty that Allah hears and responds. The etiquette of du'a includes beginning with praise of Allah and blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ, being persistent without haste, and avoiding sin that may prevent acceptance.
