Jabir ibn ‘Abdullah said: We were with the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, when he came upon two graves whose occupants were being punished. He said: “They are not being punished for something major—indeed, one of them used to backbite people, while the other did not protect himself from urine.” He called for a fresh palm frond—or two—and split it. Then he ordered that one piece be planted on each grave. The Messenger of Allah said: “Their punishment will be lightened as long as these remain moist”—or, “until they dry out.”
