‘Arim narrated to us, saying: Hammad ibn Zayd narrated to us, saying: Hajjaj al-Sawwaf narrated to us, from Abu al-Zubayr, from Jabir ibn ‘Abd Allah, that Tufayl ibn ‘Amr said to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, “Would you like a fortress and protection—the fortress of Daws?” The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, declined because of what Allah had reserved for the Ansar. Tufayl emigrated, and a man from his people emigrated with him. The man fell ill and became distressed—or something similar was said—and crawled to a quiver. He took a broad-bladed arrow and cut both his veins, then died. Tufayl saw him in a dream and asked, “What has been done with you?” He replied, “I was forgiven because I emigrated to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.” Tufayl asked, “What is the matter with your hands?” He replied, “It was said, ‘We will not repair for you what you damaged of your hands.’” Tufayl related this to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, who said, “O Allah, forgive him also concerning his hands,” and raised his hands.

The narrator signals uncertainty about the word rendered فضجر; قرن is rendered as a quiver following the English witness.
Is ‘became distressed’ the best rendering of فضجر in this report?
مشقص refers to a broad, sharp arrowhead or blade; ودجيه denotes the two jugular veins.
Does ‘broad-bladed arrow’ convey the object precisely enough here?
