Muhammad ibn Salam related to us: ‘Abdah informed us, from ‘Ubayd Allah, from Nafi‘, from Ibn ‘Umar: ‘Umar saw a striped silk robe and said, ‘Messenger of Allah, if only you would buy this and wear it on Friday and when delegations come to you.’ He said, ‘‘Umar, only one who has no share in the Hereafter wears this.’ Then some robes of the same kind were presented to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and he sent one to ‘Umar. ‘Umar came to the Messenger of Allah and said, ‘Messenger of Allah, you sent me this, though I heard you say about it what you said.’ He replied, ‘I did not give it to you to wear. I gave it to you so that you could sell it or clothe someone with it.’ So ‘Umar gave it to a maternal half-brother of his who was an idolater.’

The witness renders the garment as silk; the precise textile description associated with سيراء may merit specialist review.

Is ‘striped silk robe’ the preferred rendering of حلة سيراء in this context?
