حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ خَالِدٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا عَتَّابُ بْنُ بَشِيرٍ، عَنْ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ رَاشِدٍ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جُبَيْرِ بْنِ مُطْعِمٍ، أَنَّ جُبَيْرَ بْنَ مُطْعِمٍ أَخْبَرَهُ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَقُولُ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ: تَعَلَّمُوا أَنْسَابَكُمْ، ثُمَّ صِلُوا أَرْحَامَكُمْ، وَاللَّهِ إِنَّهُ لِيَكُونُ بَيْنَ الرَّجُلِ وَبَيْنَ أَخِيهِ الشَّيْءُ، وَلَوْ يَعْلَمُ الَّذِي بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَهُ مِنْ دَاخِلَةِ الرَّحِمِ، لَأَوْزَعَهُ ذَلِكَ عَنِ انْتِهَاكِهِ.

‘Amr ibn Khalid narrated to us, saying: ‘Attab ibn Bashir narrated to us, from Ishaq ibn Rashid, from al-Zuhri, who said: Muhammad ibn Jubayr ibn Mut‘im informed me that Jubayr ibn Mut‘im told him he heard ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, say from the pulpit: ‘Learn your lineages, then maintain your ties of kinship. By Allah, something may come between a man and his brother; if the one between them knew of the bond of kinship that lies within, that would restrain him from violating it.’

وَلَوْ يَعْلَمُ الَّذِي بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَهُ مِنْ دَاخِلَةِ الرَّحِمِ
The wording points to an inward kinship bond, but the exact referent of الَّذِي بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَهُ is compressed.
Should the phrase be rendered more directly as ‘if he knew the kinship bond between them,’ without the image of something lying within?
