Abu Hurayra reported that the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: A man visited a brother of his in a village, and Allah stationed an angel along his way. The angel asked, ‘Where are you going?’ He replied, ‘To visit a brother of mine in this village.’ The angel asked, ‘Does he have a favor toward you that you are tending to repay?’ He said, ‘No. I love him for Allah’s sake.’ The angel said, ‘I am Allah’s messenger to you: Allah loves you as you love him.’
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The phrase هل له عليك من نعمة تربها is difficult; the translation interprets it as asking whether the visitor was tending to repay a favor received from the brother.
The clause appears to ask about a favor from the brother that the visitor tends or cultivates, possibly with the sense of repaying it.
Should this question be rendered as asking whether the visitor is repaying a favor, or does تربها carry another nuance here?
