حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي مَرْيَمَ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي حُمَيْدٌ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَنَسًا يَقُولُ: خَطَبَ رَجُلٌ عِنْدَ عُمَرَ فَأَكْثَرَ الْكَلاَمَ، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ: إِنَّ كَثْرَةَ الْكَلاَمِ فِي الْخُطَبِ مِنْ شَقَاشِقِ الشَّيْطَانِ.

Sa‘id ibn Abi Maryam related to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Ja‘far related to us, saying: Humayd informed me that he heard Anas say: A man delivered a sermon in ‘Umar’s presence and spoke at length. ‘Umar said: “Excessive talk in sermons is among Satan’s bombastic utterances.”
