Arabic hadith text

‘Abdullah ibn Salih related to us, saying: Musa ibn ‘Ali related to me, from his father, from ‘Amr ibn al-‘As, who said: I am amazed by a man who flees from destiny while inevitably encountering it; who sees the speck in his brother’s eye but leaves the log in his own; and who draws resentment out of his brother’s heart while leaving resentment in his own. Whenever I have entrusted someone with my secret, I have never blamed him for disclosing it. How could I blame him, when I had become burdened by it?

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The idiom ضِقْتُ بِهِ ذَرْعًا means that the speaker felt unable to bear or contain it.

  • وَكَيْفَ أَلُومُهُ وَقَدْ ضِقْتُ بِهِ ذَرْعًا

The idiom means the speaker himself had become unable to bear or contain the secret, not that he assigned the other person an impossible task.

Should the English witness’s final clause be corrected to preserve the idiom’s subject and sense?
