‘Affan narrated to us; Hammad ibn Salamah narrated to us, from Sa‘id al-Jurayri, from Abu Nadr, from Usayr ibn Jabir, who said: When the people of Yemen arrived, ‘Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, began asking the groups, ‘Is there anyone among you from Qaran?’ He continued until he came to Qaran. He asked, ‘Who are you?’ They said, ‘Qaran.’ The reins of ‘Umar—or of Uways—fell, and one of them handed them to the other, whereupon ‘Umar recognized him. He asked, ‘What is your name?’ He said, ‘I am Uways.’ He asked, ‘Do you have a mother?’ He said, ‘Yes.’ He asked, ‘Did you have a white skin condition?’ He said, ‘Yes. I prayed to Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and He removed it from me, except for a patch the size of a dirham at my navel, so that I might remember my Lord by it.’ ‘Umar said to him, ‘Ask forgiveness for me.’ He replied, ‘You are more entitled to ask forgiveness for me; you are a Companion of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.’ ‘Umar said, ‘I heard the Messenger of Allah say, “The best of the Successors is a man called Uways. He has a mother, and he had a white skin condition. He prayed to Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and He removed it from him except for a patch the size of a dirham at his navel. He then prayed for his forgiveness.”’ Then he blended into the crowd, and it was not known where he went.
He later came to Kufa. We used to gather in a circle remembering Allah, and he would sit with us. Whenever he spoke, his words found a place in our hearts unlike the words of anyone else. The narrator mentioned the report. ‘Abd al-Malik ibn Abi al-Shawarib narrated to us; ‘Abd al-Wahid ibn Ziyad narrated to us; al-Hasan ibn ‘Ubayd Allah narrated to us, from Ibrahim, from al-Qarthi‘, from Qays—or Ibn Qays, a man from Ju‘fi—from ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, who mentioned a report similar to ‘Affan’s.
